- Senator Barack Obama defeated both Senator Hillary Clinton and John Edwards in Saturday's South Carolina primary, winning over 55 percent of the votes to Clinton's twenty-seven. Some see the Obaam surge as a backlash against possibly racist comments by Senator Clinton's husband, former President Bill Clinton.
