- National banks like JP Morgan Chase and Citibank are beginning to cut back loans, and in some cases, not provide loans to students who attend community and commercial colleges. Over 40 percent of undergrads in the U.S. are enrolled in a community college and Latinos are twice as likely to attend community college over a four-year college.
- A majority of Mexicans think their government is losing the battle against drug cartels, according to a survery by Mexico City newspaper Reforma. Organized crime-related murders in México have nearly doubled since 2006.
- The ashes of deceased Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain were reportedly stolen from widow Courtney Love: "They were all I had left of my husband. I used to take them everywhere with me just so I could feel Kurt was still with me."
- Dr. Fredric J. Baur, designer of the Pringles potato chip container, passed away last month. He had part of his ashes buried in one of the tube-shaped cans. (via Boing Boing)
