Bolivia's Tajira province has voted in favor of greater autonomy from the country's central government. The oil-rich region joined the provinces of Santa Cruz, Beni and Pando, which also voted to distance themselves from the socialist government of Evo Morales.

The U.N. International Narcotics Control Board has released a report recommending Bolivia and Peru limit the use of coca – used to make cocaine – to "medical and scientific purposes." Coca leaves are widely used in indigenous communities for medicinal and religious purposes.
