Fernando Miranda Rios, aka Michoacan, is a hip hop head through and through – but it's his venture into disco music that has bodies moving on the dancefloor. Rios first started producing rap tracks in high school with brother Daniel, but it was a trip to a local record store that took him on a path to higher beats per minute. The East Palo Alto native was going through the dollar bin and hit upon Space’s 1977 album, Magic Fly. Hearing Space, the classic French disco duo, inspired Rios to take a stab in a new direction.
Eight EPs later, Michoacan has crept above ground and become an important player in the contemporary disco scene. Club bangers like "2 Bullets Disaster" and "Dancefloor Destruction" have found their way into the sets of international DJs like Lee Burridge and Dr. Lektroluv. His latest, a remix EP of the "2 Bullets" track with reworks from The Glimmers and DJ Harvey, is out on Grayhound Recordings.
