Drug violence has killed 5,000 people in México over the last two years, according to Mexican newspaper El Universal. The number of deaths in the last eight months has already surpassed last year's total number of killings.

The U.S. has approved a $400 million anti-drug package for México. The aid, which includes helicopters, drug-sniffing dogs and technical assistance, will increase México's anti-drug budget by 20 percent.

Mexican police have cordoned off a hospital in Tijuana, México, where eight alleged members of a drug cartel are being treated. Fifteen people were killed in drug shootouts over the weekend. One in four people killed in drug-related violence in México this year were killed in Tijuana.
