Drug violence has killed 5,000 people in México over the last two years, according to Mexican newspaper El Universal. The number of deaths in the last eight months has already surpassed last year's total number of killings.

A second high-ranking Mexican police officer, Esteban Robles, was gunned down last week, one day after national anti-narcotics officer Edgar Millán Gómez was shot dead. Robles was in charge of the anti-kidnapping unit of the Mexico City police department.

Mexican police have cordoned off a hospital in Tijuana, México, where eight alleged members of a drug cartel are being treated. Fifteen people were killed in drug shootouts over the weekend. One in four people killed in drug-related violence in México this year were killed in Tijuana.
