- Calle 13’s highly anticipated second release, Residente o Visitante (Resident or Visitor), is heating up the press with its eclectic take on reggaetón. Newsday exclaims: “[T]he duo has emerged as one of pop’s most playful satirists and profound idealists.” NYDailyNews sums up the album as “an exhilarating travelogue through the sounds and rhythms of El Sur, with generous sprinklings of Calle 13’s signature foul-mouthed lyrical brilliance.”
- Music Is My Savior, the debut album by MIMS, gets a "B" from Entertainment Weekly, who compares the New Yorker rapper's sound to “Jay-Z’s mid-’90s blinged-out phase.” Rolling Stone gives it a respectable three stars, suggesting listeners just “kick back and enjoy it for what it’s worth.”
- Brother Ali’s second LP, The Undisputed Truth, "hardly ever loses its cool," and is an "exercise in contained reflection and determination," according to Prefixmag. The Onion’s A.V. Club gives the albino rapper a "B+" for his “unselfconscious candor … that makes each new album feel like a letter from an old friend.”
- British punk rockers The Arctic Monkeys return with Favourite Worst Nightmare, their second album. “The cynicism is as barbed as the guitar riffs,” says the New York Times, underscoring the band's disillusionment with pop stardom. BBC Collective is impressed with the Monkeys’ ability to “tap everything from ska and reggae, to prog-metal and post hardcore.”
- Bebel Gilberto’s third U.S. electro-bossa nova release, Momento, receives high marks from Billboard.com, who describes it as “another postcard-perfect soundtrack for summer.” Webzine Musicabrasileira insists the "charming" Brazilian songstress is "not only a good performer, but also a gifted composer.”
